Many students initially find the works of Homer, Ovid, Shakespeare, Marlow, Mckay, Plath, Angelou and countless others inaccessible due to their use of heightened language. These young people may be surprised to find that they already possess the necessary skills to interpret this complex, beautiful and important work. Students decipher heightened language every time they listen to rap and hip-hop. In this workshop, Jim walks teachers through a process that allows students to recognize the importance of poetry/heightened language in our society, and empowers them to employ the interpretive language skills they already use when enjoying popular music to understanding great works of literature.

  • Perfect for English and Theater Teachers grades 6 - 12

  • Typical Workshop Length, 3 hours

  • 30 participant maximum
